As a Calgary photographer I don’t get the opportunity to photograph on the beach. There are so many opportunities in Calgary for gorgeous locations and beautiful sunsets, but the sunset on the beach in Ireland was something to behold. I know your first thought, I know mine was, might be “really, the beach in Ireland?” Yes really, and they are beautiful!

We spent a week on the west coast which of course means amazing sunsets every night. We were so lucky, it didn’t matter how cold and rainy the days were, the evenings never disappointed. You might ask, what did they wear to the beach. Well this is where we had to be creative. It was so cold, and the Irish Atlantic is FREEZING. With daytime highs of only 11 or 12, we can safely say it wasn’t beach weather. As we live in Calgary, my kids did not want to miss any opportunity to spend time in the waves, it is such a novelty and something they only get to experience when we go on vacation.

So here is what we did – we took their splash pants and put them over their rubber boots. Then they wore their beautiful Irish wool sweaters and finally put their rain jackets onto of it all. This protected from the wind and the splash of the waves. It workers so well. We were able to spent well over an hour in the waves at the beach. Yes we came home with wet socks and some wet jeans, but over all they were warm and dry and they could’t be happier.

I think it was a definite highlight to the vacation. On any given day if you asked them what they wanted to do, the answer was overwhelming “GO TO THE BEACH” So yes. The beach in Ireland in the spring is a perfectly valid vacation choice.
